Here are the rhymes I use to remember the Bass Clef notes: Memorise the note names through some simple rhymes. The best way to learn Bass Clef is to do 3 things:ġ. However, Middle C in the Bass Clef goes on a ledger line above the stave so there are loads of notes we can write below Middle C without having to use any ledger lines. If we were to use a Treble Clef (remember, Middle C in the Treble Clef goes on a ledger line below the stave as shown below) then we would have to use loads of ledger lines – this would make the music really difficult to read. Let’s take a piece of music where there are lots of notes below Middle C. Well, the reason we have the Bass Clef is simple – to make music easier to read by avoiding the use of too many ledger lines. I often get asked what the point of the Bass Clef is because its existence just seems to make life harder for no good reason!! Upon completing the course you will be able to recognize notes on the treble clef and bass clef instantaneously.The Bass Clef always poses problems for people trying to learn how to read music. This is the method used in my course, How to Read Sheet Music. The professional method is to train the eyes to recognize reference notes and patterns. I do not teach them, however, since I find them ineffective. Such devices may be useful memory aids, and if they are helpful to you in the very beginning stages, then I cannot object to your using them. For the spaces, the mnemonic “All Cows Eat Grass” is used. To learn the lines of the bass clef, the awkward mnemonic “Good Boys Do Fine Always” is typically used, with the first letter of each word indicating the notes on that line (bottom to top: G, B, D, F, A).
